Travelling to Paderborn, Germany 2 --- Paderborn Town (b)

I rest in the hotel for a while and revived myself from the cool weather…

I followed the Kasseler Straße until it joined with Kamp Street. The corner house supposed to be the Episcopal Palace (POI 13). Along the road you shall see a modern shopping centre, Libori Gallery, which ware the site of the old post office built in 1720.

I ate lunch at the burger shop (or kebab shop) opposite Libori Gallery. I ordered Hawaiian Burger, from far I thought the burger served with beef patty and hash brown. But actually it is pineapple…...so now I knew Hawaiian = Pineapple…

After my lunch, I continued along Kamp Street. The Liborius Fountain (POI 14) with the statue of Paderborns patron saint was seen on the left of the street after Libori Gallery. Then the Theodorianum Grammar School with its Theological Faculty (POI 15) was just around the corner. It was connected to the former Jesuit Church (POI 16).

There were other historical buildings which includes Franciscan Church (POI 17) on Westernstraße, Liborius Chapel (POI 18) and Capuchin Church (POI 19). Yeah…yeah…more ad more churches…just like the scene of mosque everywhere in Malaysia…

Travelling to Paderborn, Germany 2 --- Paderborn Town (a)



Paderborn is a more rural city as compared to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. There is no sky scrapper or busy street. The atmosphere here is very calm and peaceful. I stayed in Hotel Aspethera (marked STAR) near Place of Interest (POI) No. 12 at the inner city of Paderborn. It was 69.00 EUR per night with breakfast and internet.

On the first day in Paderborn, I planned to perform the short walk through the town myself (It cost 45.00 EUR for a guided tour of 90 minutes, with 10.00 EUR for each extra 30 minutes). I followed the tourist guide map and explored myself, free of charge…it was not that difficult…

There are about 20 historical buildings in the inner city itself. As a good engineer, we always try (I said try…) to follow the instruction manual as much as possible. Hence, I started my walk from the town center, where the former Carolingian Royal Palace’s foundation walls were (POI 1). The palace was where the first Franconian Imperial Assembly was held in year 777 (more than 1,200 years ago).

The next two POIs are churches, i.e. Dom or Cathedral (POI 2) and Gau Church (POI 3) on the other side of the market square.

Next, walking through a narrow alleyway (past Neptune's Fountain), you shall find the magnificent Rathaus or Town Hall (POI 4). In front of the town hall was an old well which the people of Paderborn used to get their water. Just around the corner, you shall find the Heising House (POI 5), it is next to the Tourist Information Centre.

Walking down Am Abdinghof (street name), you shall find the Pader Springs (POI 7), a river where people can rest and relax at the pedestrian precinct adjacent to the river. Then, you can see Abdinghof Church (POI 6), a protestant parish church with twin tower. The City Gallery (POI 21) was just beside the twin tower church…sometime is not us, the engineers want to bypass the instruction, just that the instruction is not good…(may be the tourist guide want to differentiate the historical buildings and modern buildings).

In the Geissel Garden (POI 10), you shall find the Cathedral Deanery (POI 8), which is used as the public library now. On the left of Michaelstraße, the St. Michael’s Church (POI 9) is located. Alongside with Geissel Garden is the small street “Auf den Dielen”, a stretch of carefully restored timber framed houses on this street are a beautiful sight.  The most beautiful one is known as the Adam and Eve House (POI 11).

I went back to the hotel for a short rest, since Busdorf Church (POI 12) was just opposite to it.

Travelling to Paderborn, Germany 1 --- Flying for more than 24 hours

I took a week off to go for a short trip to Paderborn, Germany...

I travelled from SG back to MY first. As it was a weekday, there were not many people on the flight. I am taking Jetstar because it touches down at KLIA (no need to transfer from LCCT) and the recent bad news on Tiger Airways always cancelling flight...

After that, I took a midnight flight from KLIA to Düsseldorf, Germany via KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines).
I watched couple of in flight movie along the way, i.e. Prince of Persia and The Karate Kid. I slept the other time as normally flight to Europe is mostly midnight in MY.

There was a transfer flight before reaching Düsseldorf International Airport, Germany at Amsterdam, Holland (I travelled by KLM, Royal Dutch Airline). I’ve checked in my luggage all the way, so just need to get my boarding pass to get going. There was no more check-in counter, only Self-Service Transfer machine, where you can confirm and print your boarding pass (I have to start using the ones in KLIA or LCCT to keep myself on the technology edge…)

There were three and half hours of flight transfer time, so I walked around. Amsterdam Airport (it was called Amsterdam Schiphol) is a very huge airport. I believed it is just like Changi Airport of SG, where most of the people shall transfer from here if they are travelling within Europe. In the airport itself, can you believe me that there are actually library, museum and casino?

One thing to note, not to walk too long within the airport although you have a long transfer waiting period, queuing through immigration and security scan can takes more than half an hour.

Morning Sun in Germany

Flying from Amsterdam to Düsseldorf is like from SG to MY, about an hour flight. I reached Düsseldorf around 9:30am (local time GMT+02:00). It took me about a day in travelling time (22 hours and 40 minutes to be exact, I flew from SG 04:50pm, GMT+08:00). I still need to catch the 10:40 train and travel another two and half hours to reach Paderborn…… with my luggage… 

By the way, in EU nations, we are only need to validate our passport entry once. There is not requiring to stamp on your passport within the EU nations.  

I shall update more on my experience and share photos on this Germany trip soon…
